Relative muscle strength — strength normalized to bodyweight — told an equally important story. Men in the placebo group lost 7.8% of relative strength during the weight maintenance phase. Those on liraglutide alone actually gained 1.0% in relative strength, largely because the drug helped preserve body weight rather than muscle. But the combined group — exercise plus medication — gained 3.3% in relative strength. Exercise with GLP-1 support is a genuine synergy for men who want to come out of a weight loss phase stronger, not just smaller.

For men not on GLP-1 medications, this research is equally instructive. Structured moderate-to-vigorous exercise — three to four sessions per week combining resistance training and cardio — is the primary driver of fitness improvements during any fat loss phase. A reasonable weekly template might include two full-body strength sessions built around compound movements like squats, rows, and presses, plus two cardio sessions at an effort level where conversation is difficult but not impossible. That’s close to what the trial’s exercise group was doing, and the results speak for themselves.

Hydration is a quiet performance variable that often gets overlooked. Men on GLP-1 medications are at higher risk of dehydration because reduced food intake also means less water from food sources. Target at least 90 to 120 ounces of water daily, more if training intensely or living in a hot climate. Electrolyte balance — particularly sodium, potassium, and magnesium — becomes increasingly important during caloric restriction and regular exercise. A simple electrolyte supplement or mineral-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, and bananas can cover this without overcomplicating your approach.
