The challenge during a cut is that performance will fluctuate. Glycogen stores run lower when carbohydrates are reduced. Recovery is slower when total calories drop. Perceived effort goes up. Men using GLP-1 medications face an additional nuance — dramatically reduced appetite can make it genuinely difficult to eat enough protein and total calories to fuel training, which accelerates the muscle loss risk if protein intake isn’t actively managed alongside the medication.

When appetite is pharmacologically suppressed, hitting that target requires deliberate, tracked effort — not intuitive eating. Log your protein the way you log your lifts. Beyond the numbers, session quality indicators deserve a place in your log. Note sleep quality from the night before, subjective energy at the start of the session, and whether pump and blood flow were notably poor. Alternatively, some men respond better to shorter, more frequent sessions that keep the training stimulus high without accumulating excessive fatigue. Track both approaches for four to six weeks each before deciding which serves you better — and use your performance log as the deciding metric, not how you feel in the moment.

One error that derails cutting phases at every level of experience is abandoning progressive overload tracking the moment the scale starts moving. The logic goes: I’m losing weight, that means it’s working, so the training must be fine. But the scale doesn’t tell you what you’re losing. Only a combination of body composition measurements, strength data, and visual assessment does that. A simple approach: take a weekly photo under the same lighting, measure key lifts weekly, and track waist circumference monthly. If the waist drops, the photos lean out, and the lifts hold steady — you’re winning. If lifts crater and photos show muscle flatness alongside weight loss, the cut is too aggressive regardless of how good the scale number looks.

What This Means For You

The men who come out of a cutting phase looking better than they started — leaner, harder, more defined — share one thing in common: they treated their training log as seriously as their food log.
