Walk into any health store or scroll through Amazon and you’ll find products promising to “naturally boost GLP-1” stacked three shelves deep. But what does the research actually support? The honest answer is more nuanced than most marketing lets on, and it’s worth understanding before you spend money on something that won’t move the needle.

GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1, is a hormone your gut releases in response to eating. It tells your pancreas to release insulin, signals your brain to reduce appetite, and slows gastric emptying. Pharmaceutical GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide and tirzepatide work by mimicking or amplifying this signal at a pharmacological level. The authors identified molecular mechanisms through which natural extracts interact with GLP-1 signaling pathways, lending credibility to compounds like berberine, curcumin, and resveratrol as adjunct tools. Berberine, in particular, has accumulated a meaningful body of evidence around glucose regulation and has been compared to metformin in some studies — though it works through different mechanisms than GLP-1 agonism directly.

If You’re on a GLP-1 Medication, Muscle Preservation Is Non-Negotiable

For men using pharmaceutical GLP-1 receptor agonists, there’s a critical gap that supplements and training must fill. A 2025 study in Nature Communications found that GLP-1 receptor agonists can cause significant muscle loss alongside fat loss — likely driven by evolutionary mechanisms that conserve energy by reducing metabolically expensive muscle tissue. The researchers demonstrated that blocking GDF8 (myostatin) and activin A — proteins that suppress muscle growth — not only prevented this muscle loss in obese mice and non-human primates but actually enhanced fat loss in the process. If you’re on a GLP-1 medication, pair it with serious resistance training and high-protein eating to protect your muscle. If you’re not on medication, these same strategies — fiber, probiotics, polyphenols, and strength training — support your metabolic health through overlapping but distinct mechanisms. The research is pointing in a consistent direction: the gut-hormone axis is real, it’s modifiable through nutrition and lifestyle, and the men who understand that have a meaningful edge.
